The typical roof replacement timeline
Crew arrival and setup — 7:00–8:00 AM
Crew arrives, sets up safety equipment and tarps to protect landscaping and foundations from falling debris. Dumpster is positioned. Most Atlas Roofing crews are on site by 7–7:30 AM.
Tear-off — 1–3 hours
Existing shingles, underlayment, and accessories are removed and loaded directly into the dumpster. Tear-off on a standard 25-square ranch takes 1.5–2 hours. The decking is inspected as it's exposed — any rotted or damaged sections are replaced before new material goes down.
Decking repairs — variable
Any damaged sections are replaced. Most homes need minimal decking work — a few sheets at most. Homes with significant ice dam history or long-deferred maintenance may require more extensive decking repair.
Installation — 3–6 hours
Ice and water shield at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, starter strip, shingles, ridge cap, ridge vent, drip edge, and all flashings. The installation phase on a standard home typically takes 3–5 hours.
Cleanup — 1–2 hours
All debris is cleared, dumpster is loaded and covered, magnetic roller runs through the yard for nails, gutters are cleared of granule debris, and the site is walked for anything missed. Atlas Roofing does not leave until the site is completely clean.
What makes a roof replacement take longer?
- Roof size: A 50-square (5,000 sqft) roof takes roughly twice as long as a 25-square (2,500 sqft) roof.
- Pitch: Steep roofs (10/12+) require more safety equipment and slower movement — add 30–50% to installation time.
- Complexity: Multiple valleys, dormers, chimneys, and skylights each add time for careful flashing installation.
- Extra layers: Removing a second layer of old shingles adds 1–2 hours to tear-off.
- Decking replacement: Significant decking replacement can add half a day.
What disruption should I expect?
Roof replacement is loud — expect hammer and nail gun sounds from 7 AM through mid-afternoon. Vibration is noticeable inside the home. Items hanging on interior walls near the roof line may need to be moved. Pets are best kept inside or elsewhere for the day. Your driveway will be partially occupied by the crew's truck and dumpster.
What Atlas Roofing handles for you: Permit application and pickup, dumpster delivery and removal, all material delivery, and complete site cleanup. You don't need to be home for the installation — though we prefer you're available at the end for a final walkthrough.
