Best Roofing Shingles for Ohio: What to Know Before You Buy

Atlas Roofing & Restoration April 2026 7 min read

Choosing roofing shingles in Ohio isn't the same as choosing them in Arizona or Florida. Our climate is genuinely demanding — freeze-thaw cycles, ice dams, heavy spring hail, and humid summers all stress roofing materials in different ways. Here's a practical guide to what performs best in Northeast Ohio.

The Ohio Climate Challenge

Cleveland and the surrounding region experiences some of the most variable weather in the country. In a single winter, a roof might endure temperature swings from 60°F down to -10°F, heavy lake-effect snow loads, ice dam conditions, and wind-driven rain. In summer and fall, hailstorms are a regular occurrence. The right shingle needs to handle all of this reliably for 25 years or more.

Three-Tab vs. Architectural Shingles

Three-tab shingles — the thin, flat, single-layer shingles common in homes built before the 1990s — are rarely installed anymore, and for good reason. They're less durable, carry shorter warranties, and perform poorly in high-wind conditions. If you're replacing a roof, you're almost certainly getting architectural (also called dimensional or laminate) shingles.

Architectural shingles are two-layer laminate shingles that are thicker, more dimensional, and significantly more wind and impact resistant than three-tabs. They carry warranties of 30 years and up, and most now come with Class 4 impact resistance ratings when you select the right product line.

Impact Resistance Ratings: Why They Matter in Ohio

The UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance rating is the highest classification for roofing shingles. Class 4 shingles are tested by dropping a 2-inch steel ball from 20 feet — simulating large hail impact. In a hail-prone state like Ohio, choosing a Class 4-rated shingle can:

  • Significantly extend the life of the roof after hail events
  • Potentially qualify you for a discount on your homeowner's insurance (check with your insurer)
  • Reduce the frequency of insurance claims over the life of the roof
Ask specifically about Class 4: Not all architectural shingles are Class 4 rated. The base-level architectural line from any manufacturer is typically Class 3 or unrated. You need to specifically select a Class 4 product.

Top GAF Shingles for Ohio Homes

As a GAF Certified Contractor, we install the full GAF shingle lineup. Here are the products we install most often in Northeast Ohio:

GAF Timberline HDZ

The most popular architectural shingle in the country, and our workhorse product. The HDZ (High Definition) line offers excellent durability, a realistic wood-shake appearance, and Class H wind resistance (up to 130 mph). Strong value for most residential replacements. Available in a wide range of colors including charcoal, weathered wood, and slate.

GAF Timberline CS (Cool Series)

Adds Energy Star-rated reflective granules to reduce summer heat absorption. A good choice if your home has poor attic ventilation or runs high cooling costs in summer. Same structural specs as the standard HDZ.

GAF Timberline UHDZ

The premium tier of the Timberline line. Thicker construction, a more dramatic shadow profile, and Class 4 impact resistance. This is our recommendation for homeowners who want the best long-term performance against Ohio hail and who qualify for insurance discounts on Class 4 products.

GAF Camelot II

For homeowners looking for a more distinctive, high-end look — a larger, more layered shingle that mimics natural slate or cedar shake. Higher price point but significantly upgrades curb appeal on older homes.

Color Choices for Ohio Homes

In Northeast Ohio, the most popular shingle colors tend to be charcoal gray, weathered wood brown, and architectural slate. Charcoal is the most versatile — it pairs well with brick, vinyl, and fiber cement siding in a wide range of colors. If you have a warm-toned brick exterior, weathered wood or barkwood tones often complement it better.

We have physical sample boards and can show you how specific colors look on homes similar to yours from our project portfolio.

What About Shingle Weight and Roof Deck Load?

Standard asphalt shingles weigh roughly 200–350 lbs per square (100 sq ft). Premium laminate shingles are on the heavier end of that range. For most residential roof decks in good condition, this is well within structural capacity. If we're replacing a roof and find deteriorated decking, we'll address it as part of the installation.
