How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take?

Atlas Roofing & Restoration April 2026 5 min read

One of the most common questions homeowners ask before scheduling a roof replacement is: how long is this actually going to take? The short answer is that most residential roof replacements in Cleveland are completed in a single day. But there's more context worth knowing — especially if you're coordinating around work schedules, pets, or out-of-town family.

The Typical Timeline: One Day for Most Homes

A standard residential roof replacement on a 1,500–2,500 sq ft home with a straightforward pitch and uncomplicated roofline generally runs 6–10 hours for an experienced crew. We typically start between 7 and 8 AM and are wrapping up cleanup by 4–5 PM.

What happens during that time:

  • Morning (1–2 hours): Setup, staging materials, protecting landscaping and siding with tarps and plywood, loading the shingle lift
  • Tear-off (2–3 hours): Removing old shingles, underlayment, and nails; inspecting and replacing any damaged decking
  • Installation (3–4 hours): Ice and water shield at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment on field, starter strips, shingles, ridge cap
  • Cleanup (1 hour): Magnetic sweep for nails, load out, final walkthrough

Factors That Extend the Timeline

Some jobs take longer than one day. The main factors that extend a project:

  • Roof size: Larger homes (3,000+ sq ft of roof) often require two days or a larger crew
  • Steep pitch: High-pitch roofs require additional safety rigging and slower, more careful work
  • Multiple layers of old shingles: If there are two layers of old shingles to tear off (common in older homes), tear-off time doubles
  • Extensive decking replacement: If we find significant rotted or damaged decking during tear-off, repairs add time
  • Complexity: Roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, skylights, chimneys, or unusual intersections take longer to flash and detail properly
We'll give you a realistic timeline upfront: During your estimate, we'll walk the roof and give you a specific time estimate based on your home's actual scope — not a generic one-size-fits-all answer.

What About the Full Project Timeline (From Inspection to Completion)?

The installation itself is one day. But the full timeline from initial contact to completed roof typically looks like this:

  • Day 1: Free inspection and estimate (usually 30–45 minutes on-site)
  • Days 2–5: Proposal review, material selection, contract signing
  • Days 5–14: Material ordering and scheduling (turnaround depends on current demand and supply)
  • Installation day: Complete replacement, usually 1 day
  • Post-installation: Final walkthrough, warranty documentation, any punch list items

In normal conditions, we can typically go from signed contract to completed installation in 1–3 weeks. During peak storm season (May–September), lead times may extend slightly.

What Do You Need to Do on Installation Day?

Very little. You don't need to be home (though many homeowners prefer to be), but if you have a gate code or access requirement, make sure we have it. A few practical things to do before we arrive:

  • Move vehicles out of the driveway if possible — we'll be parking a truck and trailer
  • Keep pets inside — there will be noise, foot traffic, and occasional debris
  • Clear any fragile items from exterior walls and window sills (vibration from nailing can shake things loose)
  • If you have a ring doorbell or exterior cameras, be aware they may capture crew activity throughout the day

What About Weather?

We don't install roofs in rain, obviously. Ohio weather being what it is, we monitor forecasts closely and communicate any schedule changes with at least 24 hours notice when possible. Our goal is never to leave your home without a complete weatherproof installation overnight.
